Slopes, Scenery and Relaxation at the Foot of Mont Blanc

When winter arrives in the Aosta Valley, Courmayeur transforms.
The white of the snow wraps around the wooden rooftops and stone houses, the air turns sharper and cleaner, and the outline of Mont Blanc dominates the landscape with even greater force — as if the cold made it more defined, closer, more real. The streets of the centre fill with the sound of ski boots on cobblestones, the clink of poles, the voices of those arriving from afar with the same anticipation in their eyes.
Courmayeur’s ski area extends across more than 110 km of slopes between 1,210 and 2,755 metres of altitude, with modern lifts and a variety of runs to suit skiers of every level. But the numbers alone don’t tell the whole story.
What sets Courmayeur apart from other major alpine resorts is the setting. The slopes descend through larch and fir forests, with glimpses of the Miage glacier and the Mont Blanc massif appearing suddenly between the trees — moments that no photograph can ever quite capture. The predominantly north-facing exposure guarantees quality snow for longer throughout the season, even on the sunniest days.

The Perfect Day on the Snow

Imagine starting the morning with a warm, generous breakfast — fresh bread, jams, eggs, something hot in the cup — while outside the village is still quiet and the morning light turns the peaks pink. There is that special stillness of winter mornings in the mountains, when everything seems suspended before the day truly begins.
Skis are collected from the heated storage room, boots are dry and ready. Within minutes, you’re on the slopes.
The day unfolds between panoramic descents, breaks in the sun at altitude — perhaps on a terrace at 2,000 metres with a vin brûlé in hand and Mont Blanc in front of you — and that sense of freedom that only the winter mountain can give. Every run has its own rhythm, every turn its own breath. It’s a sport that engages the whole body, but frees the mind.
Those who want to go higher can take the Skyway Mont Blanc cable car up to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 metres, and take in one of the most extraordinary alpine panoramas in Europe before returning to the slopes. An experience within the experience.
Then comes the return. Cheeks reddened by the cold, satisfaction in the legs, that good tiredness that speaks of a day lived to the full.
And this is where the experience changes pace.

Relaxation After the Slopes: The True Luxury of the Mountains

After hours on the snow, the body needs to recover. That’s not weakness — it’s wisdom. Those who understand it live the following day better, and take home a fuller memory of the holiday.
At Hotel Berthod, the return has a precise rhythm: first the heated ski storage, where equipment and boots find their place safely. Then the “Les Crottes” spa — carved out of the ancient stone cellars of the nineteenth-century building — a space where time slows almost physically, where the steam of the sauna and the warmth of the hot tub dissolve not only muscular tension, but thoughts as well.

The hot tub, sauna, steam room and relaxation area work together to support recovery: improving circulation, releasing the muscles tightened by hours of turns on the slopes, and preparing the body for deep rest. The kind of rest found only in the mountains, when outside the snow muffles every sound and silence is complete.
For many guests, it is precisely this balance between sport and wellbeing that makes a winter holiday in Courmayeur unique. Not just the slopes — but the before, the during and the after, each experienced with the same care.
